Harry Avery’s Castle, Newtonstewart is also in the exhibition at the Alley Theatre until February 10th. This castle is interesting because it is based upon Anglo Norman castles but it was built by a Gaelic Chieftan. It had a tall curtain wall with a least two towers and must have been very impressive. The surviving semi circular towers flanked the entrance but unlike at Norman castles this entered a tower house like feature with stairs to the main level rather than a courtyard.
