I’ve been back to Liverpool. The view I sketched of the Liver Building and its neighbours a few years ago is no more. It has been blocked by a new building- the Mann Island development by Broadway Malan Architects. It is a RIBA Award winning building housing the new RIBA North Gallery. However, it was also nominated for the Building Design Carbuncle Cup in 2012. Its that sort of building, very well finshed and very dramatic, housing some impressive spaces. It could be described as a strong buiding for its monumental context which is clearly not seeking to be mistaken as part of the historic white ‘three graces’. I can’t help thinking, however, that something has been lost by intervening on what was an impressive view already.
