The Lion Gate at Mycenae in Greece was constructed in 13 BC and was once regarded as the begining of ‘architecture’ in that, for a long time, it was the earliest known use of decoration to enhance a built structure (in the European tradition). The sculpture is the basis of the crest of the RIBA.
