The Industrial City: The Nineteenth CenturyDuring the Nineteenth Century the city became industrialised and massively expanded. Large warehouses and shirt factories were constructed along the riverside and around the edges of the urban area. Buildings became more decorative as fashions changed and the city prospered.
New buildings were often constructed in styles considered appropriate to their function, like gothic for churches, educational institutions and alms-houses and the classical style for banks. By the end of the century, four railway lines terminated along the banks of the river and the Queen Anne Style, from the period when the City Walls were first constructed, was popular again. . |
