Co Fermanagh

County Fermanagh was originally created in 1585 under Queen Elizabeth I and reflected the area then controlled by Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone. This extended  north to Derry and covered most of the traditional land of Tír Eoghain ruled by the O'Neill as head of the of the Cenal Eoghain. When he left in the Flight of the Earls in 1608, this land was declared forfeit by the Crown and included in the Ulster Plantation. In 1613, as part of this, the  northern portion of the county became part of the new county of Londonderry. The remainder stayed as County Tyrone.
